The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a safety alert on mini-magnet toys for the holiday season. According to the safety alert, if a child swallows two or more small magnets, the magnets will not necessarily pass through the body. Instead, the magnets can magnetize through the intestinal wall, possibly “creating perforations, blockage and twisting in the intestines, plus infection, blood poisoning and death.”

The CPSC is aware of “at least 33 cases where children swallowed loose magnets and required emergency surgery.” It is recommended that if a child has swallowed magnets, they seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of magnets in the intestines include abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.

Some toys containing small, powerful magnets, such as Magtastik and Magnetix Pre-School Magnetic Toys, have already been recalled because of the dangers they pose to children. The CPSC urges parents to keep all small magnetic toys away from children and to regularly check their childrens’ toys for missing or dislodged magnets. Learn more about Lieff Cabraser’s representation of parents whose children have been injured by dangerous and defective children’s toys.

As reported in The New York Times, consumers were urged today by Inez Tenenbaum, head of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), to stop using the pourable gel fuel and to contact the manufacturer or distributor for a refund. “It’s a dangerous product that we want to warn consumers to stop using,” Tenenbaum said. “Stop, drop and roll or trying to smother it (the flames) does not work.” Flash fires created by the thick, alcohol-based gels are difficult to put out with water and more effectively stopped with dry powder extinguishers, Tenenbaum added.

The CPSC reports 65 incidents “resulting in two deaths and 34 victims who were hospitalized with second and third degree burns of the face, chest, hands, arms or legs.”

600,000 drop side and non-drop side cribs manufactured by Dorel Asia SRL have been recalled due to the risk of suffocation to infants and toddlers.

On January 19, 2010, the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall of 600,000 drop side and non-drop side cribs manufactured by Dorel Asia SRL based the risk of suffocation to infants and toddlers. The Dorel cribs were sold at Kmart, Sears, Wal-Mart and other stores.

As noted by the CPSC in its recall notice, the hardware and latches on the drop side of the certain Dorel cribs can break or deform, causing the drop side to detach. When the drop side detaches it creates a space between the drop side and crib mattress in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped. When an infant or toddler’s face, neck and/or torso are compressed, the child can quickly suffocate and die or suffer permanent injuries.

In addition, recalled cribs can pose a serious entrapment and strangulation hazard when a slat is damaged. This can occur while the crib is in use, in storage, being put together, taken apart or reassembled; or during shipping and handling.

A complete list of the models of Dorel cribs that were recalled can be found here. The CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs, find an alternative safe sleeping environment for your child, and contact Dorel Asia to receive a free replacement kit.

Consumers should log on to www.dorel-asia.com to order the free replacement kit to prevent child entrapment in these cribs. The repair kits will be provided to owners within the next several weeks. Or consumers can call Dorel Asia toll-free at (866) 762-2304 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.

Consumers may report crib malfunctions, entrapments, problems, injuries and/or deaths to the CPSC by calling its recall hotline at (800) 638-2772.

Lieff Cabraser is currently representing parents whose children were severely injured or died in defective cribs or bassinets.

2009-2010 Polaris All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) have been voluntarily recalled by Polaris Industries because the front suspension ball joint stem can separate from the steering knuckle and cause the rider to lose steering control, posing a risk of injury or death to riders

2009-2010 Polaris All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) have been voluntarily recalled by Polaris Industries in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed. About 8,500 of the vehicles are subject to the recall. Manufactured by Polaris Industries Inc., of Medina, Minnesota, the front suspension ball joint stem can separate from the steering knuckle and cause the rider to lose steering control, posing a risk of injury or death to riders. Polaris has received 19 reports of incidents involving the recalled ATVs. No injuries have been reported.

This recall involves model year 2009 and 2010 Polaris Sportsman ATVs with certain VIN numbers. The ATVs were manufactured between January and August 2009. The VIN number and manufacture date are located on the right front of the ATV on the frame rail next to the front shock. Manufactured in the U.S., the vehicles were sold at Polaris dealers nationwide from February 2009 through November 2009 for between $7,500 and $10,800.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ATVs and contact their local Polaris dealer to determine if your model and VIN number are included in this recall and to schedule a free repair. Polaris is directly contacting registered owners about the recall. For additional information, contact Polaris toll-free at (888) 704-5290 between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit the company’s Web site at www.polarisindustries.com.

For parents wanting to provide their children some good, clean off-roading fun, the Fushin, a smaller-than-normal all-terrain vehicle, seemed just the thing. Except the Chinese import with jaunty yellow paint and a low $250 price tag was missing one feature: front brakes.

As the New York Times reports, in the $5 billion market for A.T.V.’s, the skyrocketing growth of Chinese imports is becoming the latest challenge for the CPSC, which is starting a global campaign to improve the safety of a product that kills more people — about 900 a year — than any of the 15,000 other products the commission regulates. The CPSC is creating new safety rules under legislation passed last year that took voluntary industry standards for ATV’s and made them mandatory. And it is scrutinizing sales of Chinese ATV’s over the Internet.

The United States’ Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the largest crib recalls in United States history, involving cribs with dropdown sides, fearing these drop-down cribs may be unsafe, even deadly.

The recall involves approximately 1.2 million Stork Craft Manufacturing cribs, some sold with Fisher-Price logos, distributed in the United States and almost one million cribs distributed in Canada. Read a copy of the CPSC recall notice. And now there is a major push to ban those types of cribs. The federal government has recalled nearly 5 million cribs in the past two years — many of them with drop down sides.
